Many of the pieces I have are small fragments: patches or pieces of clothing that have been salvaged from a larger piece. I picked up quite a few of these on my first trip to Bhuj, Gujarat, in 1995.
Each one is so intricate, they can be studied for hours...
The arrangement of the design on the fragment below indicates that it would have been a skirt. If so, there would have been a lot of yardage in the original, but I have only a narrow strip. The colors are so rich.
The following piece is basically whole. It has intact edges, so it's the size it was originally made to be - about 5" square. I don't know its purpose - possibly a decorative mat or covering related to offerings? All but one of the mirrored pieces has come out, but I like the pattern of intact circles and squares of embroidery that would have held them.
